More than 30,000 plants as well as lakes, waterfalls, sides, sculptures, native and endangered species make up the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico, located steps from the PR1 road from Río Piedras to Caguas, with entrance through Guaracanal Street.
Conceived as an educational center for scientific research and a sociocultural meeting place, it is a living laboratory for the study of tropical plants and the many species of birds that inhabit it. It is also a recreation and recreation area for its visitors.
Its premises cover about 289 ropes of land. It has a Herbarium that holds more than 36,000 specimens of dissected plants. The Garden provides the public with knowledge on topics related to native flora and information on ecological topics for the preparation of school projects. Guided tours, workshops, seminars, conferences and exhibitions are offered for students, the community and the general public. An important resource, with access available by appointment to researchers, is the Federal Forest Service Library.
The Garden is divided into two parts by the PR-1 road: the Northern Botanical Garden and the South Botanical Garden. Most of the attractions for visitors are located in the Southern Botanical Garden, which are directly next to our location.
In the northern section are the herbarium, ornamental plant nurseries and the tree nursery of the Trust for Nature. They also locate the Editorial buildings of the University of Puerto Rico, the administrative offices of the Botanical Garden. In this section there is also a Preschool Development Center and the offices of the Filius Institute for Research on Impediments and Rehabilitation.
In the southern section is the information center, the parking area, and the book and gift store "Verde que te quiero Verde". There is also the Experimental Agricultural Station of San Juan and the specialized library in botany and agronomy of the Forest Service. It also houses the buildings of the Central Administration of the University of Puerto Rico, sideboards, themed gardens, sculptures and plants native to Puerto Rico, many in danger of extinction.
